Create a website: Tips for Bringing your Business Online

by Tem Balanco

To create a website can be a long and sometimes difficult process, but the rewards are worth the effort. If you're looking to put up a site for your business, it can help you get more customers through the door. There are some things, however, that you'll need to consider when you want to make your website. You'll have to remember a few things:

1. Ask yourself - what you want your site to do for you? Some online newcomers usually aren't very sure what they want to put on their site, so it helps to make a plan first. Is the site simply to give information about you and your business, so you can tell casual inquiries, "just look at my site"? Or will it be more complicated, where your customers can make orders, transact online, or give you customer feedback?

2.Don't put all of your information up front. Many sites are guilty of information overload: too much content all at once, so that when the potential client logs on, he's immediately flooded with info. But in reality, users tend to be turned off when they see a lot of text. Put only the most important information on your front page, and divide the rest into chunks that your client can process, one at a time. This way you'll keep your potential clients' attention.

With this goal in mind, keep your pages divided into categories when you create a website. Avoid long blocks of text, especially text that will require your user to scroll down. You want them to see only the most important information, and then if they want to know more, give them other pages they can look at for further information. For contact info, for example, make a separate link and site section. These things make your site easily navigable and less confusing.

3.Readability is the key. Not only does your site have to be well-organized, but it should also be easy on the eyes. Being loud, visually, only annoys many users, and gives them a bad first impression when they enter your site. Keep your site's color palette limited, and use colors that are easy to read text on. You want your user to keep on reading, so you want to make his experience as comfortable as possible.

4.Update as often as you can. If your site is about a fast-paced industry where a lot of things change quickly, like automobiles or computers, then you want to have your site updated regularly. So if you want to create a website that you intend to update often, you may want to look into content management systems. If you want to make a site that will just have your basic company info and contact details, then a simple, static website will suffice.

An effective website for your business can be a good investment for both your time and money. But to create a website that's effective, you just have to remember: it's all about presentation. Your average user will have a short attention span, so make sure that you present your information in an orderly, concise manner. Keep it visually interesting, but don't go overboard. If your website looks good, users will be more likely to stick around and find out more about your company.
